GIF’s are back! Or did they really never go away?

 

Eventually everything comes back. Or does nothing disappear after all? Existential questions…

Take the GIF for example. Since 1987 it’s known as one of the first image animations, accessible for computer dummies. Do you remember? After that, GIF’s have had their ups and downs. And yes, 2020-2021 is an up year!

What exactly is a GIF?

GIF, an acronym for “Graphics Interchange Format”, is an image file that can be used almost anywhere where you would use a PNG, JPEG, or another standard image file. Nothing picky, just nice and easy!

Why do GIF’s keep coming back? They’re fun. Accessible. Modest. A little like us, we would say. 😉 They have a flipbook-like effect and we love that. A little rough around the edges. It fits the spirit of perfectly imperfect. And the urge for self-made authenticity.

Content creators play with a series of still images. They put them in a loop, creating their short story. And brands? They do exactly the same, because we all love those effortless vibes.

And to be honest, we are huge fans of the 80’s! Soon we will see Atari’s classics Pong and Asteroids coming back. For the Gen Z’ers and Millenials among us: check out the newly published book: ‘Atari Design, Impressions on Coin-Operated Video Game Machines’.
